ADVENTURES IN FILM Pirate Radio
This delightful 2009 film is a fictional riff on the pirate radio stations that actually did broadcast from ships offshore to enthusiastic audiences of millions in the UK in the 1960s when the government-monopoly BBC did not play rock music. Those who can get past the gratuitous drugs and boozing and the predictable boy-loses-virginity story line (yawn) will find a lot of great 'My Generation' music (The Who, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, etc.) and a cautionary tale about what happens when a government strikes the wrong balance between individual freedom and the good of the order. The 1960s saw one of the greatest flowerings of pop music ever and the film successfully captures the spirit of the times.
