THE PAGANINI OF DOUBLE
BASS French composer Renaud Garcia-Fons draws on classical and jazz elements, as well as world music influences from Andalusia to India, to create his truly sublime music. Born in Paris of Catalonian origin, he has pursued nothing short of the complete liberation of his instrument, inventing new techniques to imitate Spanish guitar rasgueado one minute, and singing viola the next. Alboreá refers to Andalusian wedding music. The album features an arresting combination of instruments - accordion, two acoustic basses, and drums. What comes out is refined and sophisticated, yet evocative - French jazz to be sure, but music that transcends genre with its unbridled lyricism. It will leave you saying, 'I didn't know acoustic bass could do that!' Well, yes it can when bowed, or played with the thumbnail to mimic the sound of the Arabian oud (lute). A first-rate adventure well worth the price of admission. Many thanks to NPR's Tom Cole for this discovery.
