Chris Thile -
If you think you despise bluegrass music, this album will make you change your tune. The first requirement to qualify as an AIM Discovery is that an album find its way to the music player and get played over and over and over again. This is indeed the case with 'Not All Who Wander Are Lost'. Thile, a member of the Grammy-winning group Nickel Creek, plays the mandolin with liquid ease. The other instruments are what you might expect on a bluegrass album - banjo (the phenomenal Bela Fleck is among the notable sidemen), fiddle, dobro, guitar, and string bass. The music transcends bluegrass with its lyricism, harmonic adventurousness, and endless inventiveness. It epitomizes the 'newgrass' style that was strong some years ago. Thile takes most of the writing credits on this truly inspired work. Enough reading. Start listening and see if this album doesn't grab you. Try 'Raining at Sunset' and 'Laurie de' Tullins'.
