Afropop doesn't get any better than this. Six years in the making, Habib Koité's Afriki was well worth the wait. The tunes are all very smooth, but the real advance here is in the texture, with the addition of female voices and animal horn players. Koité impresses with his earnest lyrics, dignity, and musical integrity (i.e., it's a short album, there's not a weak track in the bunch - no filler). And, it goes without saying, that Africans are best at rhythm and this album pleases in that department also. There is something very comforting about this music. Put it on a good sound system and let it wrap its arms around you.
