Hard to find good music these days? Here are some albums worth listening to. These recommendations are completely independent - AIM accepts no promotional fees or CDs whatsoever. The music rises or falls on its own merits. To be recommended, the music has to find its way into my collection and get played repeatedly. That rates an 'Honorable Mention' while 'Discovery', AIM's highest distinction, is reserved for those rare occasions when the music is among the best of its kind.

This 1996 release is a gem, a real find for anyone who is easily bored with pop music. It will especially appeal to Pat Metheny fans. Lauria wrote and arranged all the songs. Silky smooth, with jazz harmonies and Brazilian rhythms, the album is too complex and sophisticated to be absorbed in a single listening. Lauria, who was born in 1960 and has performed with the Pat Metheny Group and Special EFX, sings and plays guitar which he started studying at the age of seven in his native northeast Brazil. Classically trained, Lauria also studied jazz vocals at the Berklee College of Music with the results being the soaring wordless vocalese heard on this album.

While Lauria remains active, he apparently has not released another album on his own since Novo Brasil. He should.
